Achieving and Maintaining a Healthy Body Weight

This is often a life long process and it is not easy for any of us. However, it is vital to the health of the one body you have. Several factors play into becoming overweight. These include:

  • Individual genetics and physiology
  • Eating and exercise habits
  • Psychological, cultural or social factors

This is why it is not only hard to lose weight but sometimes even more difficult to keep it off. Many people have tried multiple diets, lost some weight then put it back on causing a "yo-yo" effect. This is frustrating and can cause people to give up.

Kids Making Their Weigh!

Weigh to Wellness has developed a child and family-centered, multi-discipline, 8 week weight management and healthy lifestyle group program for the treatment of childhood obesity.  It is based on the research proven and highly successful Trim Kids ™ program by Melinda Sothern, PhD, M.Ed, C.E.P. and colleagues at the Prevention of Childhood Obesity Laboratory at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University. The Trim Kids™ program has over 15 years of success helping children lose weight with the support of their families.

This medically supervised program provides education and support in helping children achieve a healthy weight and have fun doing it! “Kid’s Making their Weigh” will take place in the Weigh to Wellness office of Dr. Andrick.

New Location offers new choices!

We will begin offering group classes for education and support, utilizing a physician supervised, multi-disciplinary team of exercise specialists, behaviorists as well as nutrition and dietary specialists.  The facility offers a full size, beautiful gym, reasonably priced personal training and exercise classes.

Weigh to Wellness is excited to begin the use of Indirect Calorimetry to accurately measure Resting Energy Expenditure (aka Basal Metabolic Rate) for each unique individual.  This will allow for a customizable weight management plan in a whole new way and will track improvement of your metabolism throughout the process.  The VO2 Lab will also assess exercise endurance thru graded stress testing allowing our personal trainer to create motivating, goal-oriented training programs.  This testing is also valuable for those involved in endurance training for marathons, triathlons etc.

In March 2010, an intensive, 12 week, family-centered treatment program for obese children and teens will begin being offered.  This medically directed program will be based on “Trim Kids” by pediatric obesity researcher Melinda Sothern, PhD, M.Ed, C.E.P.  The program uses a multi-disciplinary approach and has a proven track record of success with over 15 years of data. A thorough summary of Trim Kids can be viewed at http://www.fathermag.com/201/weight/.

Don't Give Up!

Achieving and maintaining weight loss for life can be done. It is a life long process of learning and it requires new ways of thinking, eating and moving in order to have success.

There is nothing we can do about our genetics, but with education, effort and commitment, we can address the factors above that we can control.

How will Dr. Andrick help me do this differently?

Assessing readiness for change with a brief questionnaire
If someone is not "ready" to make the changes in their life necessary for success, it may be best to wait until they are feeling life is more manageable and feel willing to take on something new.

Expectations and setting reasonable goals
Losing just 10% of your body weight can make a big difference not only to your physical health but mental wellbeing!

Nutrition Education
After realizing how much "nutrient dense" foods can benefit your health, increase your energy level and prevent disease, it will help change your dietary habits. It is my intention to make every patient a "student of nutrition" because once you become one, it becomes more difficult to eat unhealthy empty calories.

Exercise
Simply starting with a walk twice a week for 15 minutes may be a good place to begin. A gradual increase in frequency, duration and exertion level can help make exercise enjoyable and doable.

Group Visits
Working with others with similar goals is motivating and gives us a sense of camaraderie! The group will meet every two weeks for education, sharing experiences and addressing difficult issues such as emotional eating, healthy food on a budget and strategies for changing old habits for good.

Family Fit

Helping children develop healthy eating and exercise behaviors when they are young is one of Dr. Andrick's passions!

The health of a child's body is a family affair. The whole family should be on board with a plan to encourage healthy habits at home. One of the greatest gifts parents can give their children is to teach them to love nutritious foods and to enjoy physical activity at a young age when their minds are open to everything new!

For the kids, it doesn't have to be about weight but rather having "stronger muscles," more "brain power" and lots of energy and we don't want to say the "D" word (diet) to them. Dr. Andrick will go over these and more helpful hints and tips at the family group visits. These visits will be child friendly, educational and will make for a fun family outing.

Dr. Andrick

Dr. Rebecca Andrick has been practicing Family Medicine and Urgent Care for 12 years. She has always been focused on preventative medicine and with the rising rates of childhood obesity, she developed a passion to learn and teach nutrition.
